Admin_HistoryBirdwell is situated in the South Yorkshire Coal Field and is four miles south of Barnsley. It formed part of the township of Worsbrough. The Working Men's Club in Birdwell was formed following a meeting held in the school in 1902. The club first used a house opposite the school and then a tin hut. In 1905 they formally registered as a club, selling beer at 1d per pint, and gin and whisky at 2d and 3d per measure. Newspapers and games were provided and there was also a regular programme of speakers. Then in 1909 premises were built in Colt Lane, housing two bars, committee rooms and a ballroom.
