Administrative historyThis department was founded in 1913 when Sydney Holland (later 2nd Viscount Knutsford) persuaded the cardiac specialist, Sir James Mackenzie (1853-1925), to head the first department of its kind after the St. Antoine in Paris, and the first cardiac unit in Great Britain.
Following the establishment of Barts and The London NHS Trust in 1994, the cardiac services transferred from the Royal London Hospital to St. Bartholomew's Hospital
