This is the catalogue database for the collections held by St Bartholomew’s Hospital Archives and Museum and The Royal London Hospital Archives and Museum, which are part of Barts Health NHS Trust. The database contains over 50,000 catalogue entries and covers over 800 years of records and artefacts, from medieval deeds to twentieth-century medical registers and from photographs to medical instruments.

As well as detailed descriptions of the individual documents, the online catalogue also includes descriptions of entire collections. The catalogue provides a written description of every catalogued record or group of records; it does not include the full text of the documents so it is not possible, for example, to search for individual entries in a hospital admissions register online. This must be carried out by the researcher in person or by an Archives member of staff.

The catalogue includes entries for objects in the hospital museum collections. Some of these can be seen in the permanent displays at the St Bartholomew’s Hospital Museum and Royal London Hospital Museum. Some items are kept in the museum stores; to view these items, you will need to make an appointment to visit the archives: Contact us.

Some of the catalogue entries, particularly those for photographs and museum objects, are linked to digital images, but in most cases it is not possible to view an image of the record itself online. You can view some sample images from our collections using the Image Gallery tab.

Published works on medicine and the history of medicine, as well as the histories of the hospitals for which we hold records, including books and articles, are also included on the catalogue.

The catalogue is a work in progress. Not all the collections we hold are catalogued, and not everyone connected with the hospitals is listed on the names database. We are continually adding more catalogue records and more digital images. If you are unable to find what you were looking for, please contact us, emailing or to find out if we may have further information in our uncatalogued collections.
