Admin_HistoryThe urban district of Darfield was created in 1896 after the Local Government Act of 1894. Prior to this the area had been under the control of Barnsley Rural Sanitary District. The council was responsible for providing services in the district such as housing, planning, parks and cemeteries, but not services such as education and libraries which were the responsibility of West Riding County Council. The council was succeeded by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council in April 1974.
