Admin_HistoryJohn Hugh Burland was born in Barnsley on April 5th 1819. He became a radical and a Chartist and was forced to leave Barnsley to avoid imprisonment. When he returned he became a teacher in Hoyland Nether, a profession he followed for the rest of his life. He was married to Eliza Hannah Surtees of Tankersley, a descendant of the founder of the Surtees Society. He died in 1888 and is buried in St. Peter's Church Burial Ground. He is remembered in the area for writing the Annals of Barnsley and it's environs - a chronological account of events in Barnsley and District from 1755 to 1864.
